Powering Tomorrow

Powering Tomorrow: Synopsis

Powering Tomorrow will tell the story of the ambitious restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1, now rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center.

Set against a backdrop of a global push for decarbonization and the race to power AI technology, the film follows a cast of plant operators, engineers, activists, and local residents as they navigate the technical hurdles necessary to bring a decommissioned plant back to life. Through intimate interviews and striking new and archival footage, the film explores how a site once defined by disaster can become a beacon of hope.

The documentary takes the viewer on an educational journey through a multi-year transformation which includes technological retrofits all told through the eyes of the employees doing the work.

With exclusive access to the project’s inner workings Powering Tomorrow poses a timely and provocative question: can the future of clean energy rise from the ruins of its past? As the world teeters on the brink of climate crisis, this deeply human story challenges us to reconsider what we fear, what we forgive, and what we dare to believe in again.

Crane Clean Energy Center and restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1.

The Unit 1 reactor is located adjacent to TMI Unit 2, which shut down in 1979 after the accident. TMI Unit 1 is a fully independent site and operated at industry-leading levels of safety and reliability for decades before being shut down for economic reasons in 2019. Historically, bringing back a nuclear plant that has been out of operation for this long has never been done previously.

Powering the artificial intelligence industry is critical to our nation’s global economic and technological competitiveness and requires an abundance of energy that is emissions-free and reliable every hour of every day. Nuclear plants are the only energy sources that can consistently deliver on that promise.

Powering Tomorrow embodies a narrative of resilience, innovation, and a commitment to a cleaner, brighter future that we aim to tell with exceptional authenticity.

TMI CCEC History

Constellation Energy acquired TMI Unit 1 in 1999, a plant that provided 837 megawatts of power until its premature retirement in 2019. The plant, which consistently operated at maximum capacity, had a significant economic impact with a $60 million annual payroll and over 600 full-time employees. In 2028, the newly named Crane Clean Energy Center (CCEC) will restore 835 megawatts of clean energy, create 3,400 jobs, contribute $3.6 billion in tax revenue, and reduce 61 million tons of CO2 emissions over 20 years. Named in honor of Chris Crane, the CCEC symbolizes a renewed commitment to America's commercial nuclear power industry.
