Wholesale Energy

Transforming Volatile Markets with Reliability

In a wholesale energy market, generators compete to sell their output to customers. This competition drives innovation and enhances consumer choice. Wholesale markets also allow for real-time alignment of energy supply and demand in order to keep prices as low as possible and supply steady.

At Constellation, we leverage wholesale energy markets to help manage market volatility, deliver consistency and efficiency, and help our customers meet their environmental goals. Direct access to every part of the energy value chain enables us to offer innovative, integrated energy solutions and empower customers to make smarter choices.

As a critical source of wholesale energy for utilities, municipal cooperatives, energy retailers and customers, Constellation is always on. We take a customer-focused approach, balancing power generation with customer demand to deliver price stability and ensure generation availability through changing market and weather conditions – even during periods of record-breaking temperatures, peak energy use and power delivery disruptions.

Powered by the nation's largest carbon-free energy fleet, our wholesale business supports our generation and customer load obligations with our diverse, low-cost portfolio of more than 60,000 megawatts (MW) of owned generation capacity.

As a top natural gas supplier in the nation, we manage a comprehensive fuels platform of transport, storage and supply to serve the demand of our gas-fired generation plants and customers.

Constellation's wholesale energy trading desk is the third largest in the United States. Our traders buy and sell energy from our state-of-the-art 65,000-square-foot trading floor in Baltimore. The desk operates 24/7 and monitors pricing and market activity across North American Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs).

The trading desk is backed by our company's financial strength and led by a best-in-class team with extensive technical knowledge. Our team includes power traders and natural gas traders who manage our energy portfolio by geographic region and timeframe. The Generation Dispatch group serves as a conduit between our traders, grid operators and power plants.
