POTTSTOWN, Pa. (June 9, 2026) – Constellation's Limerick Clean Energy Center recently completed another safely-executed spring refueling and maintenance outage, investing $90 million in the facility and delivering local economic benefits across the region.
"During this outage, we safely completed upgrades that will allow Limerick Unit 1 to continue to deliver dependable, emissions‑free electricity for decades to come," said Marty Bonifanti, Limerick site vice president. "This work is very important to the region’s energy future as the demand for reliable, emissions-free electricity continues to grow. We use the outage as an opportunity to invest in the plant's long‑term performance and that creates well-paying jobs and economic growth for our community."
The Limerick Clean Energy Center has been an integral part of the Montgomery County business community for decades, providing hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in economic support, including around $5.6 million in property taxes in 2026 for schools, roads and other public services. The station is home to two boiling water reactors capable of delivering 2,317 megawatts of emissions-free energy – enough energy to power 1.7 million homes.
The outage welcomed 1,400 skilled electricians, pipefitters, welders, carpenters, laborers, steamfitters and other tradespeople to the area for more than 20 days, keeping area hotels, restaurants and shops bustling at capacity. In addition, the workforce raised more than $12,000 to be distributed among selected local charities, extending the outage's positive impact even further into the community.
"Limerick's refueling outages are a powerful and welcome injection into the TriCounty Area's economy," said Harrison Santangelo, president of the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce that serves southeastern Berks, western Montgomery and northern Chester Counties. "When hundreds of specialized contractors arrive to support these critical operations, they immediately fill hotel rooms, providing a significant boost to our hospitality sector. More importantly, this influx of temporary residents generates substantial spending at our local restaurants and retail businesses, creating a positive economic ripple effect that benefits our entire community."
"The men and women of the Pennsylvania Building Trades rely on the good-paying jobs that result from these refueling outages," said Rob Bair, president, Pennsylvania State Building Trades. "Pennsylvania has long been a national leader in nuclear power, and the Building Trades are proud to be part of that heritage, contributing to the positive economic, environmental and energy impacts across the commonwealth."
"The outage brings a lot of patronage into our business. The workers from Limerick Clean Energy Center eat dinner here, but they also network with us and help spread the word about our business," said P.J. Smith, manager at Giovanni’s restaurant in Pottstown, which has been in business 18 years, almost all of those years supported by the Limerick workforce and contractors.
"They are constantly ordering from us. We might get six or seven major orders a day from Limerick," Smith said. "They keep us busy, and it’s awesome. We love the support for small local businesses, helping us thrive."
In addition to this year's outage, over the past year, Constellation and its foundation donated more than $320,000 to nonprofits in the area, and Limerick employees volunteered more than 4,700 hours in the community last year.
The work performed during the outage included cooling tower performance upgrades, generator component replacements and other projects that position the unit to operate safely and reliably for the next 24 months.
