West Medway Generating Station II

Delivering Grid Stability with Fast-Start Technology

West Medway Generating Station II combines speed, flexibility and advanced technology to ensure reliable power. Owned and operated by West Medway II, a wholly owned subsidiary of Constellation, this two-unit, 192-megawatt (MW) simple-cycle, dual-fuel electric generation facility located in West Medway, Massachusetts went into commercial operation in 2019. It primarily uses natural gas and can also operate on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) for up to 30 days per year.

Fast-start technology allows the plant to accelerate from start to full power in 10 minutes, making it an ideal resource for backing up wind and solar power systems and supporting grid reliability. Its high-efficiency turbines and advanced pollution-control technology make it one of the cleanest peaker plants of its kind in the nation.

West Medway Generating Station II is co-located with a three-unit 124-megawatt oil-fueled power plant, West Medway Generating Station I.

Safety First

Constellation takes a safety-first approach in our culture and business practices. All Constellation generation facilities employ sophisticated emergency response plans to protect public health and safety. Plans are reviewed and approved by state governments and federal regulatory agencies. Emergency planning includes coordination with local and municipal officials, as well as thousands of volunteers and first responders.

To protect the safety and health of our employees, contractors, customers, and communities, we've implemented a number of initiatives to promote safe behaviors both on and off the job. These include a safety behavior observation program and focused initiatives on areas of high risk. We also offer safety training, which is integrated with leadership development programs for supervisors and managers, as well as new employee orientation. Finally, a safety peer group identifies successful pilot programs or new practices that can then be adopted by the entire organization.

Supporting the Local Economy

Constellation’s power plants pay local real estate taxes every year to support county and township government, area schools, libraries, park districts, and other public services where our plants are located.
