Exelon Generation’s Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Returns to Service

ONTARIO, NY (May 20, 2017) Exelon Generation operators returned R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant to full power May 20, successfully completing a scheduled refueling outage that began in late April.

More than 900 additional workers joined Ginna employees to complete the refueling outage. The additional staff lodged in area hotels and patronized nearby restaurants and stores providing a significant boost to the local economy.

“Ginna Nuclear Power Plant is an important economic engine in our community,” said Donna Burolla, president, Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “Local businesses welcome the additional workers each refueling outage.”

“The refueling outage would not have happened without the Clean Energy Standard (CES),” said Ontario Town Supervisor, John Smith. “The CES allows the state to reap the rewards of nuclear plants that are reliable producers of carbon-free energy and key drivers of jobs and economic growth.”

While the unit was offline, technicians replaced nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel and performed more than 5,000 inspections, tests, maintenance activities and modifications. Exelon Generation invests millions each year to upgrade its plants, installing new equipment and enhancing components to make the facilities even safer and more efficient.

“The work done over the past several weeks supports our ability to provide safe, reliable, emissions-free power to New York energy consumers for another 18-month cycle,” said Ginna Site Vice President, Bill Carsky. “We sincerely appreciate the skilled workers who joined our team to set the plant up for a great run.”

R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant is located on 426 acres along the south shores of Lake Ontario in Ontario, NY, about 20 miles northeast of Rochester and 53 miles southwest of Exelon's Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. The plant generates enough carbon-free electricity for nearly 500,000 homes. Join us on Twitter and You Tube.
