Handley Generating Station

Delivering Reliable Power with Flexible Natural Gas Generation

Handley Generating Station, owned and operated by Constellation, has evolved from a historic steam plant to a modern natural gas facility that Texans rely on. This three-unit, 1,265-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fueled electric generation facility located in Fort Worth, Texas, provides electricity to customers in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) during periods of high demand.

Handley began operations in 1902, when the Northern Texas Traction Company built what was the largest generating plant in the area along Lake Erie. When Unit 1 was built, it was the first outdoor steam electric fossil power plant of its type in the industry. The site sits near Lake Arlington, a popular recreation area for the local community.

Constellation takes a safety-first approach in our culture and business practices. All Constellation generation facilities employ sophisticated emergency response plans designed to protect public health and safety. These plans are reviewed and approved by state governments and federal regulatory agencies and include coordination with local and municipal officials, as well as thousands of volunteers and first responders.

To protect the safety and health of our employees, contractors, customers and communities, we've implemented a number of initiatives to promote safe behaviors both on and off the job. These include a safety behavior observation program and focused initiatives on high-risk areas. We also offer safety training integrated with leadership development programs for supervisors and managers, as well as new employee orientation. Plus, a safety peer group identifies successful pilot programs and new practices that can then be adopted across the entire organization.

Handly Generating Station pays municipal real estate taxes totaling nearly $2 million every year to support local government, schools, libraries, parks and other services in the communities where our facilities are located.

Handley Generation Station is proud to be active in the local community. By supporting events and initiatives that make a positive impact, we make meaningful contributions through:

  • Community Sponsorships: The power plant sponsors several community events including Handley Festival, "Light Up Arlington" July 4th Celebration and the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Christmas Toy Drive.

  • Charitable Giving & Volunteering: Handley employees give generously to the community through a variety of charitable initiatives including the local United Way chapters, Operation Warm-Coat Give-Away and Tarrant County Food Bank.
